Grease Monkey™ Silver Back

Concentrated Acid Aluminum Etch for Superior Coating Adhesion

Transform your aluminum-finishing process with Silver Back, a powerful, time-saving acid etch that replaces messy media blasting and delivers consistently superb paint and powder adhesion.

Product Overview

Silver Back is a ready-to-use concentrate engineered to chemically roughen stripped aluminum surfaces in as little as two minutes. By etching microscopic peaks and valleys into the metal, Silver Back ensures primers, paints, and powder coats bond deeply—for finishes that stand up to the toughest environments.

Key Features

  • Rapid Etch Action

    • Full surface activation in 1–2 minutes

    • Repeatable dwell cycles for heavy-gauge or complex parts

  • No Blasting Required

    • Eliminates the need for sand or bead blasting

    • Saves on equipment, media, and labor costs

  • Simple Application

    • Spray with standard acid-resistant sprayer or fully submerge in HDPE or plastic dip tank

  • Safe, Controlled Chemistry

    • Methylene-chloride-free, low-fuming acid formula

Benefits

  • Time & Cost Savings

    • Process dozens of parts in the same cycle time previously spent on a single blast

    • Reduce labor hours and eliminate blast-media purchase and disposal

  • Superior Coating Performance

    • Deep mechanical “tooth” for primers, paints, and powder coats

    • Prevents flaking, peeling, or corrosion undercutting

  • Consistent Results

    • Uniform etch profile across flat, curved, or recessed geometries

    • Easily repeatable for parts requiring deeper surface profile

Typical Applications

  • Automotive Restoration: Etch engine blocks, valve covers, trim pieces, brackets

  • Aerospace & Marine: Prime airframe components, deck hardware, fittings

  • Industrial Manufacturing: Pre-coat process for extrusions, castings, machined parts

  • DIY & Hobby: Perfect for wheels, handlebars, decorative castings

Directions for Use

  1. Preparation: Ensure aluminum is stripped of paint, powder, oils, and oxidation.

  2. Apply Silver Back:

    • Spray Method: Evenly mist on all surfaces until wet.

    • Dip Method: Submerge in solution.

  3. Dwell: Allow 1–2 minutes of contact. For heavy gauge or recalcitrant alloys, repeat or extend dwell up to 5 minutes.

  4. Rinse & Neutralize: Thoroughly flush with fresh water. Optional alkaline rinse for alkaline-sensitive coatings.

  5. Dry & Coat: Air-dry or wipe down; proceed immediately to primer, paint, or powder coat.

Safety & Handling

  • DANGER: Corrosive. May cause severe skin and eye burns.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • First Aid:

    • Skin/Eye Contact: Rinse immediately with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

    • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Call poison control at 1-800-222-1222.

  • PPE Required: Acid-resistant gloves, goggles or face shield, chemical-resistant apron, and proper ventilation.

  • Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling instructions.
